Multitude Of Storage Options In An Affordable Camera
The Amcrest Pro HD IP2M-841 is an affordable IP camera that offers a lot of flexibility as far as storage options for a camera priced under $50. This 1080P Full HD camera's image quality is sharp and the motorized pan and tilt functionality is smooth and quiet. You may have difficulty getting it to work with other home automation devices, but it works with many NAS devices such as Synology and QNAP which is great if you have a NAS set up for remote access and don't want to pay for a cloud service.
Design
The Amcrest Pro HD comes in your choice of a black, white, or silver finish. It has a dome-shaped head that swivels 360 degrees around and tilts a full 90 degrees. In the back, you'll find a Fast Ethernet (10/100) port an LED indicator, a reset button, and a slot for a microSD card to store video on if you so desire. It comes with an easy-to-assemble ceiling mount and screws. The option to store video in the cloud, an SD card, a PC, or a NAS can be found in the setting section of the web interface. This makes it a very flexible IP Camera.
Features
The camera itself provides 2-Megapixel at 1080P and 16x digital zoom. Picture quality is sharp yet somewhat distorted at certain angles. This is to be expected from a wide-angle lens. The Amcrest HD Pro has a 90-degree field of view and offers infrared night vision up to a distance of 30 feet.
Amcrest's cloud storage is a bit pricey and ranges from $6 per month for 7 days of storage to $15 a month for 30 days. There is also a free service that offers 4 hours for free. As I mentioned you can bypass this by using your own Synology or QNAP NAS as a cloud service.
Once the Amcrest mobile app is set up on your phone you can view activity in your home from anywhere. Pan and zoom functions work well from the phone and you can use two-way audio to communicate with family members even pets. Don't leave the two-way sound on though because it can produce feedback that can be annoying.
Configuration options on the mobile app allow you to create and add devices and do the basic setup of the camera on your WiFi and Ethernet networks. More detailed configuration can be done from the web interface by typing in the device's IP address and entering its username and password. The web interface is intuitive and has a large assortment of controls.
Setup
The camera can be set up with either Android or iOS apps. A QR code is used to marry your phone to the camera for life or until the reset button is depressed. The setup consists of naming the device and giving it a username and a password. You'll want to stick with the defaults (username: admin and password: admin) at first and then change these later as the setup routine doesn't seem to like any other settings. The wizard is not the most intuitive setup routine I've seen but if you follow it and do what it says your phone will be connected to your camera via WiFi in a few minutes.
Performance
The HD Pro's pan and tilt functionality is smooth and quiet. It's much slower using the mobile app than the web app but it's still manageable. The image is crisp and clear on both. The audio is loud and clear but it can produce some feedback. This makes it good for basic communications like "Honey are you home?" and "Get out!" Any longer, more meaningful conversations are not advisable. Motion detection works very well with the default settings. I recommend not getting too involved in the confusing range and time settings.
Conclusion
The affordable Amcrest Pro HD has a lot to offer in terms of performance and flexibility. While other surveillance cams try to steer you to their cloud service the Amcrest Pro HD offers a multitude of storage options that all work. It's almost too configurable. Some of the settings in the web browser can get confusing so I recommend not venturing too far from the defaults. The picture quality is a bit distorted in spots but otherwise sharp with good color.
